Karauli. A remarkable display of social cohesion has emerged from the Gudla village within the Sadauli gram panchayat of Karauli district, where a unique electoral strategy led to a decisive victory for a new sarpanch. Following the reservation of the sarpanch seat for the Scheduled Tribe category, the local community faced the challenge of selecting a candidate who could represent the village's interests effectively. In a move that has since become a focal point of discussion across Rajasthan, the Gurjar community, which has historically held the seat, joined forces with the Dhanka community to support a consensus candidate.
The decision was finalized after a series of community meetings where the name of Naina Dhanka was proposed. Naina, who is married to Rahul Gurjar, belongs to the Scheduled Tribe community, making her eligible for the reserved seat. This strategic alliance between the two communities ensured a unified campaign, with residents conducting door-to-door outreach to emphasize the importance of social harmony and future development for the village. The campaign focused on collective progress rather than traditional political divisions, setting a new precedent for local governance in the region.
The election results underscored the effectiveness of this collaboration, as Naina Dhanka secured a commanding 2,107 votes. She faced a crowded field of 11 candidates, yet managed to defeat her closest rival, Hariom Meena, by a significant margin of 1,864 votes. The overwhelming support from both the Gurjar and Dhanka communities was instrumental in this landslide win, which was celebrated with a victory procession through the village streets.
Naina Dhanka is recognized by villagers as a young and educated individual committed to the welfare of the community. Her victory is being viewed as a successful experiment in navigating the complexities of seat reservation through mutual consensus. As she prepares to take on her official responsibilities, the village remains optimistic about her potential to drive local development. This election has sparked widespread interest, highlighting how rural political dynamics can evolve when communities prioritize unity over traditional power structures.
