Jaipur Wedding Season Uncertainty: JDA Issues Notices to 90 Marriage Gardens

The upcoming wedding season in Jaipur has been clouded by administrative uncertainty as the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) has issued formal notices to 90 marriage gardens across the city. These venues, which are already heavily booked for the festive months ahead, now face scrutiny regarding their operational status, building bylaw compliance, and land usage permissions. The sudden regulatory action has triggered widespread concern among both venue operators and families who have already finalized their wedding arrangements and distributed invitations.

The JDA's intervention centers on four primary issues: the lack of commercial land conversion, failure to adhere to established building bylaws, the absence of mandatory parking space, and operations within restricted residential zones. According to officials, approximately 40 percent of a venue's total land area must be reserved for parking to meet safety and traffic management standards. Furthermore, a significant majority of these venues are reportedly operating on leased land, adding a layer of complexity to the required conversion processes.

Venue operators have expressed strong opposition to the notices, highlighting that they already pay substantial annual fees to the municipal corporation. These payments, which can exceed seven lakh rupees for larger venues, cover various heads including license fees, sanitation charges, and fire safety clearances. Operators argue that they are functioning in accordance with existing municipal bylaws and that the demand for fresh commercial land conversion—estimated to cost between one and two crore rupees—is financially prohibitive and redundant.

The Jaipur Marriage Garden Committee has initiated discussions with senior officials from the JDA and the Urban Development Department to seek a resolution. While the authorities have clarified that no venues have been sealed yet, the ongoing legal and administrative pressure remains a significant concern. Representatives for the venue owners remain hopeful that the government will consider their grievances and provide a viable path forward that balances urban planning regulations with the practical needs of the city's hospitality sector.
