New Degree College to Empower Hearing-Impaired Students in Bapatla

Bapatla. A significant milestone in inclusive education is set to unfold in Bapatla as the Andhra Pradesh government prepares to launch a dedicated degree college for hearing-impaired students. Following a recent State Cabinet approval chaired by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, the new institution will commence operations from the 2026-27 academic year. This initiative aims to provide a seamless transition for students who have long excelled at the secondary and intermediate levels but previously faced limited options for higher studies.

The college will initially offer 30 seats for a B.Com. program specializing in Computer Applications. To ensure students remain competitive in the modern workforce, the curriculum will also integrate specialized Artificial Intelligence certification courses. Officials have indicated that the scope of the institution is expected to expand in the future, with proposals currently under consideration to introduce additional degree programs including B.A. and B.Sc. streams.

This development builds upon the legacy of the Government Residential School and Junior College at Vedullapalli, which has served as a beacon of success since its inception in 1987. With a consistent record of achieving 100 percent pass results in public examinations since the introduction of intermediate courses in 1999, the institution has proven that students with hearing impairments possess exceptional academic potential. Currently, the school supports over 200 students, many of whom have gone on to secure roles in government departments and major private sector firms.

The absence of a government-run degree college had previously forced many students to discontinue their education after completing their intermediate studies. With approximately 450 hearing-impaired students passing their intermediate exams annually across the state, the new college is designed to bridge this critical gap. District administration officials have confirmed their commitment to implementing the state guidelines to ensure the facility is ready for the upcoming academic session.

Beyond traditional academics, the institution emphasizes holistic development, training students in technical skills such as carpentry, welding, and computer operations. Students also maintain a strong presence in sports, with many aspiring to represent the country on national and international stages. By providing access to higher education, the government hopes to further empower these students to pursue professional careers and achieve greater independence.
