Banswara/Jaipur. A coordinated nationwide movement has gained significant momentum as organizations across 400 districts submitted formal memoranda demanding that the historic Mangarh Dham be officially declared a national monument. This initiative, spearheaded by the Rajasthan Vanvasi Kalyan Parishad and allied groups, seeks to secure formal national recognition for the profound sacrifices made by tribal freedom fighters during the colonial era.
The memoranda, addressed to the President, Prime Minister, Governor, and Chief Minister, emphasize the site's immense historical and cultural significance. Activists are calling for a comprehensive development and conservation plan that aligns with the site's status as a symbol of national heritage. In Rajasthan, delegations met with district collectors and sub-divisional officers in Banswara, Udaipur, Kushalgarh, and Baran to ensure the message reaches the highest levels of government.
The historical context of the demand centers on the events of November 17, 1913, when thousands of tribal men, women, and children were killed in British gunfire on Mangarh Hill. Led by Govind Guru, the Bhagat movement had fostered social reform and national consciousness among the tribal communities of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra. Proponents argue that this shared legacy deserves a permanent place in the nation's collective memory.
