Conflicting government data emerges on E20 fuel efficiency impact

New Delhi. Vehicle owners across the country are seeking clarity on the impact of E20 fuel on older engines as government ministries have released slightly differing estimates regarding potential efficiency losses. While authorities have dismissed viral social media claims suggesting a drastic decline in mileage, official data from the Road Transport Ministry and the Petroleum Ministry show a lack of consensus on the exact percentage of the drop.

In a recent statement to the Lok Sabha, the Road Transport Ministry cited collaborative research from the Automotive Research Association of India, the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, and the Indian Oil Corporation. This report suggests that vehicles originally designed for E10 petrol, including BS-III, BS-IV, and BS-VI models, may experience a reduction in fuel efficiency ranging from 2% to 6%. The ministry noted that the specific impact varies significantly based on the age and category of the vehicle.

Meanwhile, the Petroleum Ministry provided a different range to the Rajya Sabha earlier this month. According to their assessment, the reduction in fuel economy for older vehicles designed for E10 fuel is generally limited to approximately 3% to 5%. Despite these variations in figures, both ministries have emphasized that the actual performance of a vehicle is influenced by a complex array of external factors.

Officials highlighted that fuel economy is not determined solely by the ethanol blend. Driving habits, the specific conditions of the road, and the overall maintenance schedule of the vehicle play critical roles in determining how much fuel is consumed. They also pointed out that E20 petrol provides distinct technical advantages, including a higher octane rating, superior anti-knock characteristics, and cleaner combustion, which can lead to smoother engine operation.

For vehicle owners, the takeaway remains that while a minor decrease in mileage is possible for older models, the change is relatively marginal. Experts suggest that keeping engines well-maintained and adopting efficient driving practices can help mitigate any potential loss in fuel economy. The government continues to monitor the transition to higher ethanol blends as part of its broader energy strategy.
