Supreme Court to Directly Oversee NEET Reforms Amid Paper Leak Crisis

New Delhi. The Supreme Court of India has adopted a stern stance regarding the operational integrity of the National Testing Agency and the central government in the wake of recent NEET-UG examination paper leaks. During a hearing on Friday, the apex court declared that it would actively monitor the measures being implemented by the government to prevent future irregularities and ensure the sanctity of the medical entrance process.

Expressing significant dissatisfaction with the reliance on temporary, ad-hoc arrangements that have plagued the examination system for years, the bench emphasized the urgent need for a permanent and robust framework. The court directed the government to present a concrete plan focused on cybersecurity and data protection, particularly as the National Testing Agency prepares to transition the NEET-UG examination to a computer-based test format starting next year.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the government, assured the court that the administration is committed to taking extensive measures to resolve the challenges faced by students. He noted that the situation is currently being monitored at the highest executive levels to ensure accountability and transparency in the examination process.

In a parallel development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that the government intends to introduce a comprehensive bill in Parliament during the upcoming week. This proposed legislation is designed to incorporate stringent provisions to combat paper leaks and examination malpractice. The draft of this bill is scheduled for discussion in the Union Cabinet, with the government aiming to secure its passage during the second week of the monsoon session.

The court's intervention underscores a growing judicial focus on protecting the interests of millions of students who rely on a fair and secure testing environment. By demanding a shift away from reactive, stop-gap solutions, the Supreme Court aims to compel the authorities to establish a resilient infrastructure capable of withstanding modern digital threats and administrative lapses.
