Environmentalist Viral Desai Merges Spirituality and Sustainability at Sacred Alakhdham

Surat, Gujarat. In a unique convergence of faith and ecological responsibility, environmental advocate Viral Desai, widely recognized as the Greenman, spearheaded a significant green initiative at the Shri Shivshakti Ramdev Alakhdham near Palsana. The event coincided with the holy celebration of Ashadhi Beej, a day that draws massive crowds to this site, which is affectionately referred to as the Mini Ranuja of South Gujarat. As more than 250,000 pilgrims gathered to seek blessings from Baba Ramdev Pir, the atmosphere was transformed into a platform for environmental awareness.

During the festivities, Desai facilitated the distribution of thousands of saplings to the visiting devotees, encouraging them to take personal responsibility for the planet. This effort was complemented by a ceremonial plantation drive conducted within the temple's cattle shelter, carried out under the guidance of the temple's spiritual leader, Yogeshwar Bapu. The collaboration between the environmentalist and the religious institution highlighted the growing importance of integrating nature conservation into traditional spiritual practices.

Reflecting on the significance of the day, Desai expressed that performing such duties at the sacred site felt like answering a higher calling. He emphasized that his ongoing mission, known as the Satyagraha Against Pollution and Climate Change, is strengthened when spiritual communities actively participate in environmental stewardship. By planting trees on such a momentous occasion, he aimed to demonstrate that protecting the natural world is a profound expression of devotion.

The event also provided an opportunity for meaningful dialogue between Desai and Yogeshwar Bapu regarding the future of regional sustainability. For Desai, the experience was deeply fulfilling, reinforcing his commitment to expanding green cover beyond the urban limits of Surat. Having already established seven urban forests within the city, he is now shifting his focus toward the outskirts to ensure a more balanced ecological footprint for the entire region.

This initiative serves as a reminder that environmental action is not limited to policy or corporate efforts but can be deeply embedded in the cultural and religious fabric of society. By reaching out to hundreds of thousands of pilgrims, the campaign successfully amplified the message of climate resilience, ensuring that the spirit of Ashadhi Beej leaves a lasting, living legacy in the form of new trees across the landscape.
