Global Spirit of Thiruvonam: Malayalis Unite in Tradition and Joy

Thiruvananthapuram. The spirit of Onam reached its zenith on Wednesday as Keralites across the globe celebrated Thiruvonam, the final and most significant day of the ten-day harvest festival. From the bustling streets of Kerala to diaspora communities worldwide, the day was marked by a vibrant display of cultural heritage, characterized by intricate floral carpets known as pookkalams and the preparation of elaborate traditional feasts served on plantain leaves.

The festivities, which began with the Atham day in the Malayalam calendar, saw families coming together to honor age-old customs. Despite varying weather conditions, temples across the state, including the renowned Guruvayur Sreekrishna temple, witnessed a massive influx of devotees dressed in traditional golden-bordered attire. The atmosphere was filled with the sounds of traditional music and the excitement of community-led events, such as tug-of-war and various cultural performances organized by local associations.

While many households spent the morning preparing authentic dishes like avial, sambar, and various types of payasam, others opted for catered sadyas to enjoy the holiday with family. The tradition of creating pookkalams remained a highlight, with children and youth competing to design the most artistic floral arrangements in their courtyards, showcasing the enduring appeal of the festival across generations.

Government and tourism initiatives have further amplified the celebrations, with the state capital hosting a week-long series of events and illuminations. These public gatherings serve to bridge the gap between tradition and modernity, ensuring that the essence of the harvest festival remains relevant for younger participants.

Reflecting the national significance of the occasion, President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended their heartfelt greetings to all citizens. Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan also conveyed his best wishes, emphasizing the unity and prosperity that the festival represents for the people of the state and the wider community.
