Barmer. In a significant political development, AICC leader and Baytu MLA Harish Chaudhary addressed a press conference at the Barmer District Congress office to announce a nationwide campaign aimed at safeguarding democratic values and the integrity of the electoral process. Joined by Barmer-Jaisalmer MP Ummedaram Beniwal and district party leadership, Chaudhary raised critical concerns regarding the functional transparency of the Election Commission and the legal provisions governing the selection of election commissioners.

Chaudhary emphasized that the strength of Indian democracy relies on the sanctity of the voter's mandate and the impartiality of the institutions overseeing elections. He highlighted that the party is seeking a thorough investigation into alleged irregularities within voter lists and the broader electoral framework. According to the leadership, ensuring that no eligible citizen is disenfranchised and that every vote is accurately recorded remains a primary objective of their movement.

A major point of contention raised during the briefing was the legal immunity granted to election commissioners post-tenure. Chaudhary questioned the necessity of such protections, suggesting that the current framework warrants a national debate to ensure that constitutional bodies remain fully accountable to the public. He argued that the role of the Election Commission extends beyond merely conducting polls; it must actively uphold the dignity of the Constitution and maintain public trust in the democratic system.

To address these concerns, the party has scheduled a 'Save Democracy Week' and a 'Save Vote, Save Country' campaign from October 2 to October 8, 2026. District Congress President Laxman Singh Godara outlined the three-day action plan for Barmer, which includes organizational meetings with INDIA bloc allies, block-level outreach programs, and a protest march at the district headquarters. The campaign aims to educate citizens on the importance of universal adult suffrage as enshrined in Article 326 of the Constitution.

MP Ummedaram Beniwal clarified that the initiative is not directed against any specific individual but serves as a collective effort to protect the democratic fabric of the nation. The party plans to conclude its local demonstrations by demanding greater transparency and accountability from the electoral authorities, signaling a sustained effort to keep these issues at the forefront of the national discourse.
