Tragic Selfie Attempt Leads to Drowning of 18-Year-Old in Abandoned Mine
An 18-year-old resident of Shiwar died after slipping into a water-filled quarry in Tonk district while taking a selfie, sparking protests over safety and illegal mining.
Sawai Madhopur. A tragic incident occurred near Bahad village in the Niwai-Baroni region of Tonk district, where an 18-year-old youth from Shiwar town in Sawai Madhopur lost his life. The victim, identified as Vishal Khatik, was visiting the mining area with friends on Thursday evening when the accident took place. While attempting to capture a selfie near the edge of a quarry, he lost his footing and plunged into the deep, rain-filled pit.
Following the fall, his companions raised an alarm and alerted the Siras police outpost. Due to the onset of darkness, search operations could not be initiated immediately on Thursday. The recovery efforts resumed on Friday morning, involving local villagers and administrative officials. After an extensive search, the body was retrieved from the water, which had accumulated in the abandoned mining site due to recent rainfall.
The recovery of the body triggered significant unrest among the local community and the victim's family. Protesters gathered at the site, expressing deep frustration over the perceived delay in the administration's response. The crowd demanded immediate financial compensation for the grieving family, a complete halt to alleged illegal mining activities in the area, and the installation of protective fencing around all open quarries to prevent future tragedies.
In response to the escalating situation, Baroni Station House Officer Jaimal Singh and Sub-Divisional Magistrate Gambhir Singh arrived at the scene to mediate. The officials engaged with the family and villagers, offering assurances regarding government-mandated compensation and support. Following these discussions, the protesters agreed to allow the body to be moved for a post-mortem examination.
The loss has devastated the family, as Vishal had been the primary breadwinner since his father passed away six years ago. His sudden death has cast a pall of gloom over the Shiwar community, leaving his mother and younger brother in a state of profound grief. The police have registered a case and initiated a formal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, with the body currently held at the Niwai Sub-District Hospital mortuary pending further legal procedures.
