Violent Assault on Bus Driver Sparks Outrage in Sawai Madhopur

Sawai Madhopur. Tensions escalated in the Bandha region on Saturday as local residents submitted a formal memorandum to the Superintendent of Police, demanding immediate legal action against a group of individuals accused of assaulting a public transport driver. The incident, which occurred on September 24, has left the community shaken and calling for enhanced security on the Bhagwatgarh-Sawai Madhopur route.

According to the complaint, driver Mahendra Yogi was operating his bus from Bhagwatgarh when the vehicle reached Nindarda Pyau around 2:35 PM. Shortly after departing, seven individuals, identified by the complainants as Mahendra Meena, Vikram, Suresh Meena, and four others, allegedly forced their way onto the moving bus. The attackers reportedly used wooden sticks and iron rods to strike the driver, causing him to lose control of the steering wheel. The bus subsequently veered off the main road and into a roadside ditch before the driver managed to bring it to a halt.

Witnesses reported that the assailants dragged the driver from the vehicle and continued the assault until passengers intervened, prompting the attackers to flee the scene. The injured driver was initially transported to the Surwal hospital by local youths before being referred to the Sawai Madhopur General Hospital for further medical treatment. His condition remains a primary concern for the local community.

The memorandum further alleges that the same group of individuals was involved in a previous altercation on July 24, 2026, targeting the bus owner's brother, Muniraj. A police case was registered at the Surwal station at that time, but villagers claim that the lack of effective follow-up emboldened the suspects to commit this latest act of violence. Additionally, the complaint includes allegations that the attackers robbed the conductor of 12,500 rupees and issued death threats against the bus owner and his family.

Beyond the physical assault, the petitioners highlighted concerns regarding the operation of illegal transport vehicles on the route, citing issues with fitness certifications and insurance compliance. Despite previous reports to the District Transport Officer, residents claim no significant action has been taken. The villagers have now urged the police to provide protection to the victim and his family, investigate the illegal transport operations, and ensure the suspects are brought to justice, warning of potential protests if their demands remain unaddressed.
