Sawai Madhopur Farmer Breaks Tradition with High-Value Dragon Fruit Cultivation

SAWAI MADHOPUR. In a significant shift toward modern agricultural practices, a progressive farmer from Mohcha village in the Wazirpur tehsil of Sawai Madhopur has successfully introduced dragon fruit cultivation to the region. Dr. Siyaram Meena, who has moved away from conventional crop patterns, is now being recognized for establishing a profitable and sustainable farming model that could serve as a blueprint for other local growers.

The initiative emphasizes the economic advantages of the dragon fruit, also known as Kamalam, which requires considerably less water compared to traditional crops while commanding a premium price in the marketplace. Dr. Meena implemented this project under the technical supervision of Assistant Agriculture Officer Pintu Meena Pahadi, ensuring that every aspect of the operation—from planting and support systems to irrigation and pest management—followed rigorous scientific protocols.

Agricultural experts highlight that the success of this exotic fruit depends heavily on precise water management, specifically the use of drip irrigation systems and effective drainage. When managed with high-quality planting materials and consistent scientific oversight, the plants typically begin to flower and bear fruit within a period of 12 to 18 months, offering a faster return on investment for dedicated farmers.

The potential of this venture was recently validated during a field visit by Deshraj Singh, the Additional Director of Agriculture Extension. After inspecting the orchard, Singh lauded the effort, describing the dragon fruit as a high-value crop that is perfectly suited for regions facing water scarcity. He noted that with proper scientific management, farmers in arid or semi-arid zones can significantly improve their income by diversifying into such specialized horticultural crops.

This experiment by Dr. Meena marks a turning point for the local agricultural community, proving that innovation and technical guidance can overcome traditional limitations.
