Tragedy at Sujan Ganga: Police officer's son dies after jumping into canal

BHARATPUR. A somber atmosphere descended upon Bharatpur on Monday afternoon after a young man ended his life by jumping into the Sujan Ganga canal, located near the historic Lohagarh Fort. Despite the immediate intervention of bystanders who attempted to rescue him with a rope, the victim was swept away by the deep waters before help could arrive.

The deceased has been identified as Pushpendra, a resident of Ajit Nagar. His father, Bahadur Singh, serves as an armorer within the local police department. According to officials from the Mathura Gate police station, the victim had left his home around 1:00 PM under the pretense of heading to a local library, where he regularly studied for civil services examinations.

Investigations into the incident revealed a history of mental health struggles. His father disclosed that Pushpendra had previously spent two years in Kota preparing for the IIT entrance exams. The failure to secure a seat during that period reportedly triggered a deep state of depression from which he never fully recovered. Although he had been undergoing medical treatment and had shifted his focus to civil services after completing his Bachelor of Arts degree, the psychological burden remained significant.

The recovery operation was conducted by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), which managed to retrieve the body after several hours of intensive searching. Authorities were able to identify the victim by linking him to a vehicle parked near the site of the incident. The body has since been transferred to the RBM Hospital mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is scheduled for Tuesday.

Pushpendra was a married man and a father to two young children. The local police are currently conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the event, including questioning family members to understand the immediate triggers that led to this decision. The loss has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the ongoing challenges surrounding mental health awareness and the immense pressure faced by students pursuing competitive careers.
