BJP Secures Unopposed Mayoral Victory in Bharatpur as Rival Withdraws Nomination

Bharatpur. The mayoral election in Bharatpur, the home district of Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, concluded unexpectedly on Friday without a single vote being cast. In a move that political observers are calling a masterstroke, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party successfully neutralized opposition efforts, ensuring that their candidate, Anuradha Singh, was elected unopposed. This victory marks a significant consolidation of power for the party in the Chief Minister's home turf, effectively silencing speculation regarding potential cross-voting or internal dissent.

The dramatic turn of events was orchestrated by Minister of State for Home, Jawahar Singh Bedham. As the election approached, the political landscape appeared volatile due to the influence of independent councilors who held a majority of the seats. Recognizing the risk, Minister Bedham took direct control of the situation. On Friday morning, he visited the residence of former mayor Shiv Singh Bhont, the husband of independent candidate Vichitra Singh. Following a closed-door meeting, the political impasse was resolved, and the minister personally escorted the couple to the municipal office to withdraw the nomination.

Addressing the media after the withdrawal, Minister Bedham emphasized the importance of unity for the city's progress. He noted that Shiv Singh Bhont, a veteran representative, chose to support the BJP to ensure that the development initiatives launched by Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma continue without interruption. The minister praised Bhont for his cooperation, stating that the decision was made in the best interest of Bharatpur's future growth.

Former mayor Shiv Singh Bhont echoed these sentiments, explaining that his decision was driven by a desire to support the Chief Minister's development vision. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to align with the government's agenda, noting that he did not want political friction to hinder the city's advancement. By stepping aside, Bhont effectively cleared the path for the BJP to take control of the municipal corporation.

The municipal corporation consists of 65 wards, with independent candidates holding 36 seats, the BJP holding 20, and the Congress holding 7. Given this numerical disadvantage, the BJP's ability to secure the mayor's chair is being viewed as a significant tactical triumph. By engaging directly with key opposition figures, the party successfully bypassed the uncertainty of a floor test. This outcome not only secures the mayoral seat but also reinforces the influence of the state leadership in local governance, effectively ending any immediate threat of political instability in the district.
